White or Ivory Wedding Colors: What’s the Difference?

Weddings

A question I get asked all the time is “White or ivory wedding colors? What’s the difference? Does it matter?” in regards to dresses, shirts, linen, and more.

The simple answer is – YES!! It absolutely matters!

From a visual standpoint, when you’re casually looking at someone wearing a white shirt, you’ll likely never notice a difference. But from a photography standpoint, there is a MAJOR difference between white and ivory.

True white, which is generally just referred to as white, photographs with a hint of blue to it more often than not. ESPECIALLY when you’re outside and the blue sky is reflecting off of the fabric!

Ivory, on the other hand, has a very subtle cream tone to it. It will appear in photos as what we mentally recognize to be true white – again, especially when you’re outside on a sunny day.

One isn’t necessarily a better choice than the other, it just comes down to personal preference. I’m on team ivory, but have had many clients choose true white! (It just takes a little more finessing for wedding photographers to edit!)

The best piece of advice I can give about white or ivory wedding colors is to make sure that everything matches the tone of the wedding dress. If you’re wearing an ivory dress, make sure all dress shirts within the wedding party are also ivory. If there’s a mix of the two it will be very noticeable in your photos!
